For Science Week in second class, we began by learning all about oil. We talked about its uses in our everyday lives such as heating our homes and keeping the engines in our cars running.

Next we started to think about what could happen when we try to locate and transport oil all around the world. The children spoke about oil spills in the ocean and the effects they can have on marine animals, birds, beaches and tourism.

From our discussion and some pictures, we could see that the oil sits on top of the water so we used this simple density concept to create our own lava lamps. We put oil, water and food colouring into a bottle before dropping in a fizzy tablet and watching the lava lamps erupt.
